As you know, that door slides. When pushed all the way to the left, you can see straight into the bathroom. When pushed to the right, you've got your much needed bathroom privacy. So, here's my thought. I want to mount a piece of art on the wall so that when the door is pulled in front of the bathroom you could see it.

I don't want to put just any art, but art that fits the space and is actually functional! For the most part, people know when the door is to the right, someone is in the restroom. . . but I think the right piece of art would not only be playful, but pertinent!
So, I've gone through a number of different ideas in my head and I want your opinion! When it comes to this sort of art, I know people can get turned off real quick. So, will you help me pick something that won't be offensive, but will still be cool/clever?
This first option is pretty straight forward.

Esty plane photo
These next three options are a little more edgy. There will be stairs going up to the loft eventually, so you won't really be able to see this picture when your sitting at the dining table (which I think is important to note). My thought is to take one of these photos and "stamp" the word(s): "Occupied," "In Use," "Do Not Disturb," or some other fitting phrase. I went ahead and put the stamp on the photo to the far right below so you could see what I am talking about.

Part of me thinks the "Ocupado" picture above is weird (possibly inappropriate), but another part of me thinks it's kind of cool. Am I crazy?
For something a little less edgy and a little more classic, I thought of going with an old photo of an actress getting ready. I think this would speak to Tim and I's desire to be in front of a camera. I also really like the photo of the legs and the bathtub. It's kind of sexy and represents what I love to do in a bathroom- relax! I could also do some sort of "stamp" on this piece, like "Do Not Disturb, Darling."

So, this is where you come in!!! Generally I don't ask for opinions on design decisions because I am very clear on what I want for the space. But with this. . . I am totally open!!! What do you like from the ideas above? What do you hate? Do you have any other brilliant ideas for me? Please weigh in!!!
I like the last two photos. . . . I wonder about making it more personal and taking a photo of yourself (selves) in a bathroom related pose (maybe no faces) and convert it to black and white and blow it up....? Then you ARE in front of the camera, and you have a cool piece of art, and its personal!
ReplyDeleteI like the last two also. I don't mind the first two but think anything where it looks like someone is actually using the toilet is kind of gross.
ReplyDeleteOut of the ones in your post, my favorite is the last. I saw this on Apartment Therapy awhile ago and I'd love to find/create something like the man/woman wall hanging: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/amandas-light-gray-white-and-blue-room-room-for-color-contest-179078
ReplyDeleteI like the legs in the tub photo. It's literal without being too literal.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to go with the straight forward option- "toilet occupied". The pictures don't do much for me because of having to picture somebody on the pot. I get having something quirky and humorous here - it just has to be picked carefully so that it's not tasteless. Have fun!
ReplyDeletei love the idea of taking a pic of y'all in the bathtub- something cute, fun, and personal- and going black and white with it. so cute!
ReplyDeleteI like the "Toilet Occupied" or maybe something clever with "The Loo" or "Water Closet."
ReplyDeleteAny picture of an actual toilet...especially someone sitting on one. yuck!
The last two pictures are cute but I don't think they're very unique. I've seen pictures like that all over Target college dorm aisles. You'd have to personalize them somehow, I think.
I love your blog. Keep up the good work!
If you want something kind of funny and a little edgy without it being an actual picture of a toilet, type in "man woman bathroom sign" on google images and there's a couple funny stick figure pictures of the man and woman crossing there legs or the man peeking over the stall at the woman. I think those are great and along the same lines. If I had to pick one of the ones you posted though I like the actress getting ready...or take a pic of both of you in a tub with man and woman shoes on :)
ReplyDeleteyou know i think the art should be anything BUT toilet-specific. it just seems gross and i can actually even smell stuff :/ (high sensory functions) the room looks so fab right now, adding something like seems to kill it. for me at least.
ReplyDeleteLove Becky's idea of playing with other wording like 'the loo' and 'water closet.'
ReplyDeleteI like the last two photos, especially with "Do Not Disturb, Darling." but I would third Becky's sugguestion--or source toilet signs from around the world and make a large collage--English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Arabic-- it would be straighforward, not gross, typographic, and unique!
ReplyDeleteStaci has a great idea. And I agree with the Becky too. I think the picture of the lady on the toilet is kind of gross. Funny in thought, but I think you would wish it wasn't hanging in your house. Sarah K's idea is clever too.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I wrote "there" instead of "their". I am totally that girl that silently corrects everyone's grammar while they are talking instead of listening and then I go and do something stupid like that! haha :) don't judge.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea someone had of making a collage of different toilet signs from around the world.
ReplyDeleteI like the legs hanging out the bathtub - very classy. I have a sign that says "Genius at Work" outside the master bedroom bathroom. The collage idea is also super cool! :)
ReplyDeleteI really like the very first option and the very last.
ReplyDeletelove the bathtub legs...very discreet, tasteful AND clever!
ReplyDeletelove Sarah K's idea above of the bathroom icon sign. I have many doors in my hallway and ordered Etsy vinyl clings with the man/woman icon to stick on the bathroom door so guests would find it...everyone loves it. I love the clean/clever design.
ReplyDeletethe bathtube for sure
ReplyDeleteGotta go with the legs and the "Do not disturb, Darling." At first I was leaning toward the graphic sign idea or the second picture (the guy in the suit), but I think the subtle humor would wear off if you had to live with it every day, and you'd just be left with a picture of a toilet on your wall. The legs seem much more live-able.
ReplyDeleteI love the top middle. Mr. Swagger fully dressed on the loo with a fur rug - how could it be wrong?
