Something Very Important

Have you heard of Cross Fit? If you haven't you should check it out. I'll get back to that later because it is not the most important part of this post.

The important part of this post is when I tell you that you should love your body. So often I hear women talk about their bodies in a negative way. At the risk of being totally unrelatable, I don't really struggle with that. Before you start to hate me, let me tell you my story.

Picture 27

A long time ago (in 5th grade) I remember being very concerned about my body and as a result I struggled with anorexia for about a year. It all started when a girl at school called me "Porky" because I ate everyone's leftovers at lunch (and probably also because I was a little pudgy). After that, I found one of my mom's workout tapes and began doing it multiple times a day while only eating canned vegetables.

I think this issue could have lasted a lot longer but something happened. The ONLY thing that I wanted to do since the 3rd grade was to play Division 1 basketball and it just so happened that when I attended a Lady Razorback basketball game that winter, they had an article in the program that basically said "You can't have the "perfect" body and still be the best basketball player." Your body has to have fuel/food to be at it's best. My mindset instantly changed and I was "healed." Yes, I loved basketball that much.

I haven't struggled with body image issues since that point. And believe me, I know that I don't have the "perfect" body or a very womanly body, but I do love my body. I love it because I push it. My body can do things most bodies can't. My thighs are big, but they are big because they are strong. When I buy jeans, the waist will be 2 inches too big, while my thighs are fighting to breathe. :) I have no boobs, but I've got abs. I've got a very muscular body, which I know some women would never want, but I'm proud of it. I am proud because it shows all of the hard work I put in every day. I am proud because I am not just a skinny girl, I am an able girl. I love my husband and I need Him in many ways, but by golly if the pickle jar lid is stuck, I can get it off myself! :) I am capable and independent! That is why I love my body.

You should love your body too! I truly believe that working out gives you an incredible confidence (you see it on Biggest Loser all the time) that you don't get from just being skinny. For that reason I totally recommend starting a workout regimen. But, even if you don't go join a gym right away, you have to learn to love your body. That C-section scar, those curves, your freckles- they are beautiful- so own them!

Well, now that the most important part is over I am totally going to plug Cross Fit. Cross Fit is a way of working out that totally rocks! Tim and I joined our local Cross Fit in September and we have absolutely loved it. You go to a class and work out with a group while trainers oversee things. The workout is different everyday and scalable for people of all fitness levels. You do everything from weight lifting, body weight exercises, gymnastic type exercises, running, and more. If you haven't gathered it yet, I am super competitive and I love Cross Fit because it provides an avenue for me to compete. I am always trying to be first in the workouts. The other thing I love is that because you work out with others, you start to develop a very team-like atmosphere (which I miss so much from my basketball days). If you're not competitive, don't worry- it's all about challenging yourself. Anyway, there are Cross Fits all over the country and you should look into joining one! They are a little more expensive than some gyms, but Tim and I find that it means we don't miss workouts! We want to make sure to get our money's worth! :) (Tim and I go to Cross Fit Tulsa by the way.)

Tim didn't want me to put any photos of him, but I am sneaking this one in. :) Shhhh! Don't tell!

Picture 20

PS- I still eat everyone's leftovers. . . at breakfast, lunch, and dinner! :)

PSS- If you think posting these pictures is weird or distasteful- I'm sorry. My goal is to help other woman find confidence by displaying and talking about my own. In fact I think you should all write a blog post (or at least leave a comment) about what you love about your amazing bodies! You are beautiful!

  1. Wow Kara, I've read from a far but never commented before. I love all you do and you have such a great gift. I felt compelled to comment here though to let you know how motivational this post is and inspiring, I hope it makes other women as excited to hit the gym hard tomorrow as it did me.

  2. What do I love about my body? Hmmm...I have a little bit of a ghetto booty. I think that's a good thing. Or at least so my husband tells me. Kara, you are an inspiration! I am going to miss you! CrossFit has changed my life and I'll never go back.

  3. I would have to pick my hands. People have told me before that they're pretty, and I always notice my hands in photos. They look different to me when I see them in pictures (rather than just looking down at them). :) I had to think for a while to come up with something I love about my body. I can think of a whole list of things that I don't like. That's saying something, I guess. Maybe I'll exercise tomorrow... maybe. :)

  6. I so hear you on the thighs in pants - I'm the same way. Mine come from genetics and HS volleyball and they never left. For me, I like to have my fitness to be a means to an end - I'm not a gym girl, but make me dance? I will work my tush off in class and in Pilates for those long, graceful lines. I've always believed that the key to being healthy and in shape is to eat everything in moderation, and find a physical activity that you love. If you hate it, you won't stick to it. I'm glad CrossFit has filled some of that old bball longing you have! You guys look great!

  7. Kara - what an incredible post! Thanks for being so honest!! You are an amazing crossfitter! I love my whole body too...every inch of it! I love my legs, arms, abs and I'm with you on the no boobs!::)) I remember a time in my life where all I wanted to be was skinny and now I am so far from that it's crazy! I want to be STRONG! I'm not as strong as you, but I'm working on it! Sure, there are days when I think certain body parts need some toning, but who doesn't do that? I just think women's clothes fit differently on different days. Period! One day a shirt can make you look good, and one day it can make you look like a cow. The same is true for pants and definitely spandex, may I add. One day they lay just right and fit perfectly and the next day you've got a muffin top or a baby bump out of nowhere. I blame it on hormones!!:))

Taking care of the body God gave us is very important. We have wonderful, magnificent bodies that God has given us that we can do wonderful things with. When we take care of that body, we feel healthy and strong. Our body works for us. We’re able to get more done and to serve God for our purpose of being here. You can’t separate the body and spirit. Our physical side affects our spiritual side and mental side, too.
It goes back to truly loving the body that God gave me. Our body is a miracle that we’re blessed with. If you look at the body in that respect, you’re going to take care of that body. We all need to learn to LOVE our bodies...we're TOTALLY worth it!!

  8. thanks for sharing! I think this post is inspiring, I agree- the stronger you get, the more confident you become. I just recently joined Sky gym and LOVE it. It's such a great ME time (I have an almost 3-year-old boy) and I'm so proud of myself when I stay disciplined and go even when I don't want to :) My bodies not perfect either, but I'm learning to love it and appreciate it... especially when I'm sick!

  9. My favorite body part is definetly my butt or my calves. I love almost all of my body just not my abs/love handles but over the past year I have been working out more. I can see a lot of changes to my mid region that are making me start to like them too. My husband and I are moving soon to an area with a crossfit gym within walking distance and we are pretty sure we are going to start doing it. -Jill

  13. Great inspiration post!!

Thanks for the motivation to get back out there. Before my wedding in December, I was counting calories and running every other day, if not every day. But, five months has slipped by, and I have yet to get back out there and run. I'm still conscious about what I eat, but I need to get back out there. Thank you for the motivation. Your pictures and competitive attitude will stick with me!

I am still very proud of my legs. I played soccer growing up and all through high school, and club level during college. I may not be able to do some of the things I could in the past, but I know my legs are still strong.

    Thanks again, girl!!

  14. I am so impressed with how strong you are! Seriously. Wow, I feel weak :) You look great!

I too am lacking in the chest, but I make up for it in the bum.

As always being a skinny girl, I'd like to point out how hurtful people can be about commenting on how skinny you are. If you don't want me to comment on your size, then shut your mouth. Throughout my life, family, friends, and the worst one, strangers, have commented on my thin frame. I know they weren't necessarily trying to be hurtful, but it's hard to feel confident with your body when other people feel they have the right to comment on it! Alright, rant over, haha.

    Great topic!

I thought I was doing okay with my normal gym workout, but I am loving CrossFit and seeing how far I can push my body and loving the outcome! This is to all the ladies out there...I am 47 years old/young..it is never to late in life to start an exercie program as you still have a long life ahead of you, that is if you take care of your body!

  24. I also love my body because of what it can do,and not necessarily how it looks. I know it can get me from A to B and back in necessary. I do Ironman triathlons and LOVE it.

  25. I just came across this post, and I LOVE it!
I have struggled with being a larger girl. I've never been fat, but being Tall and not skinny seemed almost just as bad. In school, I was called at best "amazon woman" and at worst "thunder thighs". All the guys acted afraid of me because I was taller than some of them. It also didn't help to have lived a portion of my life in Japan, where all the woman are as small and delicate as flower petals. It left me feeling unfeminine, overbearing, and intimidating, when all I really wanted to do was be a wall flower.
Then I discovered the Wonder Woman was supposedly from the Amazon, and she was a total badass. Suddenly being 'amazonian' didn't seem so hideous to me and I saw it more as being the biggest and best woman to ever be woman. Little by little, my self-consciousness became self-confidence (and it's still growing!)

I also used to, like so many women do, complain about how other people can eat and eat and not gain weight. Then I tried a new way of thinking: My body is superior in that it requires a fraction of the calories some need just to survive. I began to see my body not as some weak and frumpy vessel for my brain, but a eco-friendly, energy efficient machine. It was something to be proud of. My endurance surpasses and will carry me through the toughest of times.
