For the movie, I was asked decorate the house in a way that would tell a story about the people who lived there. In real life, our decor and the things you find in our homes give others insight into who we are. The same is true within a movie, the set has to help the viewer understand who the characters are- what they love, where their from, what they do, ect.
This room needed to convey that the main characters (a couple) were: educated, well traveled, and somewhat artistic.
Not only did I have to worry about telling a story with my design, I had to make sure the decor translated well on camera. I needed tons of texture, warm colors, and lots of layers. Lighting is another HUGE thing when using a camera of any kind. Luckily, there was a whole department that helped the space come alive with light, but I also had to provide as many practicals as possible (table lamps, floor lamps, sconces, ect).
I loved the look of the layered rugs and the super cool trunk that acted as a coffee table.
In the corner I created a little reading nook. The shelves that flanked the walkway were filled with books that not only added texture, but helped to tell the story of the main character (who just happened to be a writer).
Probably my most favorite thing in the entire house was the mantle decor!! I LOVE how unique all the items were, the composition of them, and of course the texture it provided!!!
Originally I thought the plain jane curtains needed a little something, so I added some red trim. Later, when the Director of Photography saw the curtains on camera, he said the hard line of red was too distracting. I agreed, and learned yet another lesson when decorating for a film. :) So, in the movie you will see the plain jane version of the curtain panels.
For anyone interested, that clean-lined chair came from Target and was only $150.
Overall, I wanted to room to look like it had been pieced together over the years with new and old items that had been passed down from family members, collected during travels, and bought when there was a bargain to be had.
There are too many items to list the source for, so if your interested in a particular piece, let me know in the comment section and I will get you the info!
