Wright's Living Room Break Down

Hey Friends!  Well today has not started off well.  Out of the blue, my computer charger stopped working and of course I was running on no power.  Ugg.  So, instead of seeing photos of a brand new project today (which are on my computer- I am now using Tim's), I am going to go over the "why" and the "why nots" of Jonny and Angelene's space!

Now, this is where I always feel like I am boring people . While the layout, furniture choice, and material decisions are all super important to a final design looking great, I always wonder if the details of how I make my choices leave you guys bored to tears?  Of course, I figure some of you read design blogs to actually pick up some tips and tricks to use in your own home. So, this post is for you!

The first issue with Jonny and Angelene's space was the layout.  The sectional was really too large for the room and the fact that it was broken up left the space feeling disjointed.  There was no flow to the room.

IMG_2896

My solution to this was to get rid of the chaise part of the sectional (it now lives in a bedroom) and bring the couch back together.  Floating it in the center of the room (instead of pushing part of it against the wall) gave us instant "walking paths" and keeps the space feeling open and airy, yet defined.

Another issue in the area was the lack of a focal point.  The television looked like a black hole stuck in the corner.

IMG_2900

Instead of just doing something cool around the TV, I wanted to create a whole wall of interest.  I feel like this keeps the TV from soaking up all the attention. Our focal wall consists of some pop art panels, upholstered panels adored with sconces, and a pretty rad acrylic TV frame.

IMG_4054

I chose the shapes for the upholstered panels based on a pair of crazy cool cowgirl boots that Angelene was wearing on our initial visit to the house.  The snakeskin like pattern on the fabric is both country and rock n' roll.

I picked the crystal sconces (which don't photograph well) especially for Angelene. She loves a little (or a lot) of bling and these lights speak to the chandelier already hanging in the dining room.

IMG_4077

I love, love the simplified baroque styled frame that we had cut out of acrylic for the TV.  You can read more about that here.

The media console was an easy choice.  It holds and hides a ton of stuff, while also fitting in with the style of the house itself.

The windows in this space are amazing!  They let in so much light and really make the space feel bigger.  The couple wanted as much seating as possible in the space, but I didn't want to block the light or the view with chairs.

Our solution?  Lucite chairs!!! This not only makes sure our view stays in tact, it fits the style of our space perfectly.  Plus, having lucite chairs in the dining area further units these two spaces making them feel like one!

IMG_4086

Although I didn't want to block any of the light from the windows, I did feel like it was important to frame them with some curtains.  These blue panels not only soften the space, they bring in a beautiful pop of color (which Angelene was really keen on)!

IMG_4055

PS- I think the flokati rug, which matches Scooter perfectly, was a pretty great choice for the space as well! ;)  Haha!

Of course a cowhide rug also brought in a nice dose of country for Ms. Angelene.

IMG_4097

Finally you might recognize that coffee table! :) It was mine, remember. . . .

IMG_3825

Well, when I started making my plan for the Wright's space and picking out items that I thought would work, I kept wishing I had another coffee table like mine to give them.  I thought the modern lines, gold top, and size would be perfect for the room.  So, in the end, I decided to sacrifice my own home's design for this space.  I think it was worth it. :)

A Space That Speaks To Their Souls

Happy Monday Friends! Today I am revealing the entire room from Jonny and Angelene's "she's a little bit country, he's a little bit rock n' roll" makeover!  :)  This couple is so unique and has such a fun story.  Angelene's dad was a country musician ("Baby Likes to Rock It" anyone?!)  and therefore Angelene grew up with a love and appreciation for music.

Of course, it was inevitable that when it came time to pick a partner, she would gravitate toward someone with her same passion.  Enter Jonny!  Jonny is far from a country artist, as a matter of fact,  he is a tried and true rocker!  It didn't take long for these two to realize how perfect they were for each other and before long, they married!  And where else would such a musically inclined couple wed than the legendary Cain's Ballroom (right here in Tulsa), where some of the most historic musicians ever have played!  Fast forward a few years and this couple had finally found their dream home.  They were ecstatic.  It had a whole basement floor level where Jonny and his band could practice the music they love at any time (right now, their accommodations won't allow it).  It also had a ton of entertaining space for Angelene to invite friends and family over.  Yes, it was their dream home and for about a year they were certain it was theirs.  Then, somehow, it all fell through and the couple was devastated.  A house is just a house, a building, but this was more than that to Jonny and Angelene.  Angelene described it as "a place that would allow them to be who they were created to be."  The reality of losing their dream home almost felt like losing a grip on their dreams in general.  Obviously, this was not an ideal situation. . . but it did make the couple an ideal candidate for our sizzle reel makeover.  Tim and I desire to not only create beautiful spaces, but meaningful spaces.  Spaces that will inspire and encourage the inhabiters to be "who they were created to be."  It was an honor for us to come in and make the Wright's current space something that would speak to their souls and become a place they truly loved.  So, are you ready to see what we did?  Let's take a look?

There is so much to discuss in this room.  There is a reason for every decision that was made from layout, to colors, to materials.  But today I am just going to show the photos. So, enjoy the finished product and we'll come back and break the elements down in upcoming posts!

Edgy, Yet Fancy Television Frame

So, tomorrow I will reveal Jonny and Angelene's living room in its entirety.  But today I felt like the treatment we gave to their TV deserved a post all it's own.

No matter how much we try to fight it, the television is the main focal point of almost every home in America.  I've come to a point where I no longer try to fight it, but rather embrace it!  Here's how we did just that with Jonny and Angelene's television. . .

IMG_4053 2

We designed a frame to surround the TV. . . nothing new there.  But what is different is the material we used and the shape we settled on.  The clear gray acrylic feels edgy and rock & roll while the baroque silhouette feels a little fancy! I feel like the combo is a perfect fit for this couple!

IMG_4092

What makes this designer even more happy is that the lines of the frame speak to the silhouette on the revamped pews and to other touches throughout the space while the acrylic speaks to the dining room chairs (and some living room ones that have yet to be revealed!).

Now, even though the TV will still be the focal point, your attention will also be drawn to the chic frame that surrounds it.  Stay tuned to see the rest of this fun focal wall tomorrow! :)

Custom Wood and Concrete Table Top

Hey Friends!  I still have a whole rock and roll styled living room to show you, but today I am getting a little off track to show you a table top that we recently designed and fabricated for a favorite client of ours!

We started with a flat table top made from 2in oak boards.  Thanks to our friend Lissa for building this piece for us!

IMG_0720

My thought was to create an "engraved" sort of look in the table.  So I decided on a pattern and Tim created the computer file necessary for the CNC machine to make my dreams a reality! :)

IMG_0718

Once the file was created, and the table top was put in place, the CNC began its work of routing out the shapes.

IMG_2981IMG_2983

IMG_2976IMG_2974

After the CNC had finished it's work, the table top look like this. . .

IMG_2986

Our next step was to stain and poly the table top. . .

IMG_4155

And then came the process of filling the voids created by the CNC.  I love the combination of wood and concrete, so we used our favorite concrete product (ARDEX) yet again! We simply used a large putty knife to push the mixture into the recessed shapes.

IMG_4173IMG_4174

We then used the knife to remove as much excess ARDEX from the top of the table as possible and let it dry.

IMG_4180

Once the ARDEX was dry, we used a wet rag to remove it from the wood, leaving the ARDEX in the former voids in tact.  Sealing the wood before the applying the ARDEX kept it from adhering to the wood permanently.

IMG_4184

A piece of wood covered in a rag was the easiest way to remove the extra ARDEX and not dig into the "engraved" parts of the table top.

IMG_4178

IMG_4183

Once we finished removing the extra ARDEX and revealed the beautiful oak, we sealed the entire piece with Polyurethane to create a surface suitable for sharing meals and resisting stains! Here's how it turned out!

IMG_4212

IMG_4208

We love how it turned out and Brenda (our client) did as well! When are clients are happy, we are happy!  Stay tuned to see what we used as a base to complement this beautiful table top in upcoming posts!  Happy Wednesday!!!
